FIELD-TESTED

Real Conditions. Real Reviews.

Every review here comes from a verified buyer with a delivered lamp. We don't filter by rating, we don't pay for reviews, and we ask everyone the same questions — what activity, what terrain, what power level, what surprised them. The honest version, in their words.

WHY THIS LAMP

What Makes the SPORT 1200 Different.

01 — Output that lasts the run

1,225 real lumens — held. The modes you actually use, all the time you need them.

The headlamp industry measures output at 30 seconds — before the LEDs have thermally throttled, before reality sets in. The number on the box is rarely the number you actually get on the trail. We measure differently: 1,225 lumens after the lamp has stabilized at operating temperature, held across the rated runtime.

Ultra runners spend most of a long effort at 100–200 lumens. Trail runners settle into 200–300 lumens on familiar singletrack. Hikers cruise at 50–100 lumens. Hunters use 5–35 lumens of red light for hours at a time.

The SPORT 1200 is built around what people actually use, not the peak number on the box. 1,225 lumens is there for the technical descent, the unexpected section, the moment you need to read the trail like daylight. The other modes — 600, 300, 100, 50, 5 lumens — are where the lamp lives.

02 — Weight, and the cooling that lets you use it

90 grams total. Battery included.

Optics, electronics, aluminum heat sink, polymer front, and one 18500 cell — all on the headband together. Not "head weight without batteries". Not "lamp body excluding accessories". Actual weight on your head, ready-to-go. The second cell sits in your pocket where it doesn't add to head weight.

The aluminum heat sink sits at the rear of the lamp body, designed to pull heat away from the LEDs throughout operation. The lamp is built to hold its rated output through the runtime — not throttle down after thirty seconds the way many compact headlamps do when they get hot. You get the lumens you paid for, for as long as the battery delivers them.

03 — Two cells in the box. One on the lamp, one in your pocket.

The whole point of the SPORT 1200.

One 18500 cell runs the lamp. The second sits charged in your vest pocket, your pack, your jacket, or the centre console of your car at the trailhead. When the first cell runs flat, you open the lamp housing (no tools), lift the spent cell out, drop the fresh one in, close. Ten seconds. The spent cell goes back into your pocket and charges in ~90 minutes from any USB-C source — phone charger, power bank, car USB, mid-race aid station.

Every runtime number you see on this page is per cell. With two cells in the box, your effective runtime doubles — or you keep one as insurance for the moment you don't see coming.

04 — Sits tight. Built for fast feet.

Lower profile. Less bounce. Better balance.

The SPORT 1200 headband sits closer to your brow than the PRO 1200's click-release version. The lamp doesn't lift off the band — that's the trade. What you get is a lower profile, less bounce on technical descents, and a center of mass that stays put when your feet aren't.

You can still move the lamp between mounts: the GoPro-compatible feet on the lamp head fit any Stormlight accessory or GoPro mount — helmet, chest rig, bar mount.

If clicking the lamp out of the headband and into a helmet bracket or chest rig is something you do often — say, you switch between trail running and helmet-mounted work regularly — then the PRO 1200 with its click-release headband may be the right choice instead. Same lamp head, same output, same hardware. Different band.

RUNTIME

Two Cells. Six White Modes. One Red Circuit.

Most headlamp specs give you one number — "up to X hours at full" — and leave you to guess how it actually works on your run. The SPORT 1200 runs in six white modes plus a separate red circuit. All runtime numbers below are per cell. With two 18500 cells in the box, every number doubles — or you keep one as a charged spare for insurance.

1,225 lm Boost 45 min

For descents, technical terrain, the moments you need to read the trail like daylight. Use it when the section demands it, drop back down for the long miles in between.

600 lm Fast pace 1h 30min

Trail at fast running pace. Reading uneven terrain at speed without the heat or runtime hit of full output. Most runners settle here for technical sections.

300 lm Moderate 3h

Steady running pace through familiar terrain. Three hours per cell — six hours with the swap. The workhorse mode for evening laps and longer trail efforts.

100 lm Cruising 9h

Cruising mode. Easy hiking, breaks between hard sections, the steady pace of a half-night event — nine hours per cell, eighteen with the second.

50 lm Long-effort 18h

Long efforts. Multi-day touring. Base-camp duty. The mode that goes the distance — 18 hours per cell, 36 hours with both. A full overnight effort on one charge, two on the swap.

5 lm Eco ~5 days (~120h)

The light that stays on. Reading a map, fixing kit at camp, tent setup, weather check. Five full days — 120 hours — per cell at 5 lumens. Ten days with the spare.

Red LED on its own circuit. Three power levels — 70, 35, and 5 lumens — for map reading and camp work without burning out your dark adaptation. Switching from red to white requires a deliberate three-second press on the power button. Not a tap. Not an accidental brush. There's no accidentally lighting up your hunting blind partner or fishing buddy by misclicking the switch.

BUILT FOR THIS

Where the SPORT 1200 Earns Its Keep.

01

Trail running & ultras

The honest answer. The SPORT 1200 is the all-rounder for runners who train through the dark half the year. 1,225 lumens for technical descents and unexpected sections, 300 lm for fast cruising, 100 lm for the long miles between. Two 18500 cells means you don't think about charging between training sessions, and you can take both on a longer effort with a 10-second swap when the first one fades.

Sweet spot. SPORT 1200 with both cells in the box and a USB-C power bank in your pack. Covers training, club runs, and ultras up to roughly 100 km without charging in the field.

Dream setup. SPORT 3100 + spare battery. 62g head + external pack — the lightest 3,150 lumen system on the market. For UTMB, Hardrock, and the races where you want absolute confidence in any condition.

02

Multi-day hiking & backpacking

The honest answer. Two cells means ten full days of camp light at 5 lumens on the box. 36 hours at 50 lumens means a full overnight push and the next evening's hike. For weight-conscious multi-day trips where charging gaps are real, the SPORT 1200 is the lamp.

Sweet spot. SPORT 1200 alone. The two cells are the answer; no spare needed.

Dream setup. SPORT 1200 + a small USB-C power bank that charges both cells while you sleep. Genuinely indefinite operation in the backcountry.

03

Hunting — jakt

The honest answer. The SPORT 1200 with its red LED on a separate circuit fits the rhythm of a hunting day. Move through the woods before first light without burning out the dark adaptation you'll need at the post. 70 lumens of red for 18+ hours per cell — a full weekend at the cabin on one charge. When the shot comes, 1,225 lumens of white is right there with a deliberate three-second hold on the switch — no accidental light at the wrong moment.

IP67 sealed against rain, sleet, and the kind of weather you walk out in anyway. Polymer-front impact-resistant housing, tested to 2-meter drops onto concrete. The fixed band keeps the lamp on your head — nothing to lose in the brush or in a quick recovery on uneven ground.

Sweet spot. SPORT 1200 + the spare 18500 charging at the cabin. For multi-day hunting trips, longer evenings out, or tracking after dusk where you need reliable output.

Dream setup. SPORT 3100. 3,150 lm for serious tracking work and the situations where you need to see a long way down a hillside in fading light. External battery pack stays warm inside your jacket in deep cold.

04

Gravel cycling, commuting & after-work rides

The honest answer. A bar-mounted bike light shows you where the bike is going. A headlamp shows you where you're looking — the parked car door about to open, the cyclist crossing the intersection, the gravel line you actually want to take through the corner. The SPORT 1200 covers both ends: 300 lm for urban commute (the sweet spot for moderate-speed asphalt), 600 lm for gravel sections where you need to read the surface ahead, 1,225 lm for the descent off the gravel route where you need the trail lit like daylight.

Zero PWM (no flicker) matters more on the bike than anywhere else — both for your eyes at fatigue and for your action camera footage if you film. Most cycling lights pulse the LED to dim; the SPORT 1200 runs constant current at every level. Footage looks like daylight footage, not a strobe.

The GoPro-compatible feet on the lamp head fit any standard helmet bracket. Switch from running to riding to the office without changing setups. A handlebar mount is in development — when it ships, the same lamp head will click between helmet and bars in seconds. 18 hours at 50 lumens per cell means a week of moderate commutes; 9 hours at 100 lm covers a long winter ride.

Sweet spot. SPORT 1200 with both cells. The spare lives in your jersey pocket or saddlebag; the swap takes 10 seconds at a coffee stop or trailhead.

Dream setup. SPORT 1200 helmet-mounted + a proper bar light for night gravel rides. Two beams, two jobs — the bar light shows the road, the headlamp shows the line you actually want.

THE SYSTEM

One Mounting Standard. Every Sport You Do.

The SPORT 1200 is part of a system. The same GoPro-compatible feet are built into every Stormlight lamp head. The headband is the one thing on the SPORT 1200 that doesn't release tool-free — and that's a deliberate choice for a band built to run.

Click-release lives on the lamp head

The headband on the SPORT 1200 doesn't release the lamp tool-free — a deliberate trade for tighter fit and lower profile during fast movement. But the lamp head itself has the same GoPro-compatible feet as every other Stormlight model. Pull the lamp off any Stormlight accessory mount, click it onto a helmet bracket, a chest rig, a bar mount. The system works — just not on the band.

Two cells — one runs, one waits

One 18500 cell sits in the lamp body and runs the head. The second sits charged in your pocket, your pack, your jersey, or the centre console of your car. When the running cell drops, you open the housing (no tools), lift the spent cell out, drop the fresh one in, close. Ten seconds — less if you've done it once.

The spent cell goes back into your pocket and charges in ~90 minutes from any USB-C source. Phone charger, power bank, car USB, aid station. The lamp doesn't care where the energy comes from.

GoPro-compatible feet + Stormlight click-release accessories

Every Stormlight lamp has GoPro-compatible feet built into the lamp head. Any standard GoPro mount — helmet, handlebars, chest rig — works out of the box.

Stormlight's own click-release accessories (helmet brackets, hard hat mounts, chest rigs) grip these same feet with a spring-loaded mechanism that won't release on impact or vibration. Same feet on the lamp, better receivers on the accessories.

Red LED on its own circuit

Three output levels: 70, 35, and 5 lumens. Preserves night vision when reading a map at an orienteering punch, checking gear in a shared tent, or anywhere white light would burn out your dark adaptation — or your partner's.

Switching from red to white requires a deliberate three-second press on the power button. Not a tap. Not an accidental brush. It's there so you don't blind yourself or the person standing next to you the moment you grab the switch in the dark.

Charging, three ways

USB-C on the lamp head charges the installed battery directly. Any phone charger works — full charge in ~90 minutes. The external multi-charger (sold separately) holds up to 10 cells at once — useful if you've added spare 18500 batteries or run multiple Stormlight lamps in your household.

And the lamp charges while in use. Plug a power bank into the USB-C port during operation, and the lamp keeps running — the battery charges as you go. For long events, multi-day adventures, or backup power from anything with a USB-C output.

A note on the cable:

You won't find a USB-C charging cable in the box. We've chosen to leave it out since most of us already own several. Producing and shipping another one when yours works perfectly well is the kind of small decision that adds up. Every cable we don't make is one less in the world's drawers.

It's a small thing, but we think it matters.

QUESTIONS

Before You Buy.

The questions we get most often — answered straight, no marketing language.

The SPORT 1200 ships with two 18500 cells in the box. One is installed in the lamp body, ready to run.

For groups, clubs, or households running multiple Stormlight lamps, the external 10-cell multi-charger (sold separately) lets you rotate a bank of cells through a single charging session.

Honest answer: it depends on how often you'll be running out of battery in the field. The 500 kr difference between SPORT 700 and SPORT 1200 buys you one extra 18500 cell in the box, and a higher peak output (1,225 vs 725 lm). Same housing, same band, same red LED, same charging.

Pick SPORT 1200 if: you do a lot of long efforts where charging isn't an option, you race or train through Nordic winters with limited daylight, you want twice the peak output for technical descents.

Pick SPORT 700 if: most of your sessions are 1–3 hours, you can charge between outings, 725 lumens covers what you actually need, and you'd rather put the 500 kr toward a spare 18500 cell when (and if) you need one.

Two batteries in the box is the SPORT 1200's whole point. If a charged spare in your pocket is something you'd actually use, the 1200 is the answer.

For training, club nights, and middle-distance courses — yes, with smart power management. The 1200 runs 45 minutes at 100% (1,225 lm), about 90 minutes at 600 lm, and 3 hours at 300 lm per cell. Most club-night courses (1.5–4 km, 27–60 minutes) sit comfortably in this window if you run 300–600 lm as your baseline and pulse to full only on technical legs and control approaches. The second cell in your pocket extends every number with a 10-second swap.

What the 1200 is not built for: competition-grade long-distance orienteering. IOF long-distance winning times sit at 88–92 minutes for elite, and a championship runner needs to push 1,000+ lm sustained without watching the clock. For that, the SPORT 3100 is the right tool — 3,150 real lumens for 90 minutes at full, 145 minutes at fast pace, with an external battery you can keep warm in a vest.

Pick the 1200 for training, club nights, middle-distance, and stafett legs. Pick the 3100 if you race long-distance seriously.

Operating range is −25°C to +60°C. The aluminum heat sink handles cold without issue. Lithium cells lose capacity below roughly −10°C — that's true of every battery on the market — and with the cell on the lamp head, it's exposed to ambient temperature.

This is exactly the situation the second cell solves on the SPORT 1200. The spare lives inside your jacket where body heat keeps it warm. When the running cell starts to weaken in the cold, you swap to the warm one; the cold one goes back in your jacket to recover. The cycle continues — running cell on the head, warm spare in your pocket. For sustained operation in extreme cold, the SPORT 3100 is designed differently: external battery pack on a cable, kept inside your jacket the whole time. Different lamp for a different problem.

The SPORT 1200's headband sits closer to your brow than the PRO 1200's click-release version. The lamp doesn't lift off the band — that's the trade. What you get is a lower profile, less bounce on technical descents, and a centre of mass that stays put during fast movement.

The lamp head itself still has the GoPro-compatible feet, so it mounts on any GoPro accessory — helmet bracket, chest rig, bar mount. What you give up is tool-free release from the band itself. What you gain is a band built specifically to run.

Same hardware platform, same 1,225 lumen output, same six white modes, same red circuit, same batteries, same charging, same multi-charger compatibility. The differences are the headband and the warranty framework. SPORT comes with the fixed low-profile headband (black with yellow Stormlight branding) and a 2-year international consumer warranty. PRO uses the click-release headband with white branding and operates under a separate warranty structure for professional and commercial use.

Pick SPORT for personal sport, recreation, and adventure. Pick PRO if the lamp is a tool you depend on for paid work.

The biggest difference is what the lumen number actually means. Most lamps in this category are rated to ANSI/PLATO FL1 — the headlamp industry's measurement standard. FL1 measures output between 30 seconds and 2 minutes after activation, and defines runtime as the time until output drops to 10% of that initial reading.

That sounds reasonable until you understand what it allows. A high-output LED hasn't yet thermally throttled at the 30-second mark — it's still drawing peak current before the heat catches up. So a lamp can be marketed at one number while in practice it stabilizes at a much lower output within the first few minutes and runs at that level for most of the rated runtime. We've seen significant drops between the headline figure and what the lamp actually delivers once it's warmed up. Technically FL1-compliant. Practically misleading.

We measure differently. Our 1,225 lumens is the output the lamp delivers at operating temperature — once the LEDs have stabilized and the aluminum heat sink is doing its job — and it's the output we sustain across the rated runtime. Same for every other mode. The number you read on the box is the number that hits the trail.

The other concrete differences:

Aluminum heat sink at the rear. This is what lets the lamp hold its rated output. A polymer front for impact resistance, aluminum at the rear pulling heat away from the LEDs. The lamp is built to deliver the lumens it claims for the duration it claims them.

Two batteries in the box. The SPORT 1200 ships with two 18500 Li-Ion cells — one runs the lamp, one waits in your pocket. Many lamps in this price band use proprietary integrated battery packs that you can't replace and can't carry a spare for. When that pack fails, the lamp is finished. Our cells are user-swappable in 10 seconds.

Repairability. Every part is user-replaceable — the battery, the lens, the switch, the circuit board, the headband. No soldering, no proprietary screws, no service centre. Ten-year part availability on every model we ship.

You can find lamps with bigger headline numbers for less money. We don't compete on that. We compete on what those numbers actually deliver in your hand at hour three of a long effort, in the rain, when the cell is half-spent.

Material and manufacturing defects under normal use, anywhere in the world. If something fails because of how it was made or what it was made of, we replace or repair it — one form, one conversation, one shipment.

The warranty doesn't cover physical damage from drops, crashes, or impact, or wear on consumable parts like the headband. For those, we offer the Repair Service: every part is replaceable, often for less than the cost of a new lamp.

Yes. The lamp head has GoPro-compatible feet built in, so any standard GoPro mount — helmet adapter, handlebar mount, chest rig — works out of the box, even though the headband itself is fixed.

For mounting on Stormlight's own click-release accessories, our spring-loaded receivers grip the same GoPro-compatible feet and won't release on impact or vibration. Same feet on the lamp, better receivers on the accessories.

Helmet brackets, handlebar adapters, and additional accessories are coming this autumn.

Yes, in carry-on. Each 18500 cell is roughly 2,600 mAh at 3.7V — about 9.6 Wh per cell, 19.2 Wh total for both. Well under the 100 Wh limit for lithium-ion batteries in cabin baggage on every major airline, and under the 20-cell loose-battery limit that some carriers apply. Always pack lithium batteries in your carry-on, never in checked luggage — that's the rule for any lithium battery, not specific to ours.

Worldwide air shipping, 2–7 days to most destinations. All duties and import taxes are included in the price you see at checkout — nothing extra to pay on delivery.

14-day return window from the day the lamp arrives. If something's wrong or it's not what you expected, ship it back and we refund in full.
