How They Work, How to Use Them.
Which Stormlight should I choose?
Most people pick between two or three of our lamps. Here's the honest guide.
Go with Storm 700. It's our most versatile model — 725 lumens is enough for running in the dark, ski tours, winter hiking, tent trips, and most of what "outdoors after dark" actually means. Light (90g), long battery life, red light for preserving night vision. If you only buy one lamp, this is probably it.
Go with Storm 1200. Same size, same weight, same feel as the 700 — but with an upgraded circuit that sustains higher output without throttling, and two batteries in the box instead of one. If you're the kind of person who doesn't like running low on anything, this is the one.
Go with Storm 3100. 3,150 lumens is serious light — the kind you need for downhill skiing, night MTB, or technical terrain where hesitation costs you. Lamp head is only 62g (lightest in its class at this output); the battery pack is light enough that many runners wear it on the headband for night trail running. For bigger efforts, it moves to a running vest or backpack. The whole system click-releases between helmet and headband. Powerbank function lets you charge your phone from the battery pack.
Go with Storm 9000. Flagship territory — 9,050 real lumens, more than the model number suggests. Built for orienteering championships, downhill mountain biking, snowmobiling, expedition conditions. Full aluminum body for extreme impact and cold. The 380g battery pack is meant for a running vest, a chest rig, or a pack — this is where orienteers get the kind of stable, blinding light that makes night legs feel like day.

How do I charge my Stormlight?
Every Stormlight lamp charges via USB-C. Any phone charger works for regular charging. For fastest charging on Storm 3100 and Storm 9000, use a 45W-capable charger; both accept up to 45W fast charging.
The USB-C ports are exposed, just like the one on the phone in your pocket. Ours are part of the IP67 seal, rated for thousands of insertion cycles, and tested extensively in Arctic field conditions. For very muddy or dusty environments, a small strip of electrical tape over the port adds an extra layer of protection. Most people never need it.
Are they actually waterproof?
Yes. All Stormlight headlamps are IP67-rated — they handle heavy rain, snow, and brief submersion (like falling into a river on a crossing). They're not built for extended diving, and the seal will not hold up over time if used that way. See our Warranty page for the full picture.
What's the difference between PRO and SPORT?
Identical hardware. Different setup for different users.
-
PRO
Black headband with white Stormlight text, understated and professional. Click-release mount on every model (Storm 700, 1200, 3100, 9000), so you can swap between headband and helmet in seconds. Built for workers who need the lamp on and off throughout the shift.
-
SPORT
Black headband with yellow Stormlight text, high-visibility in the field. Storm 700 and 1200 come with a solid mount on the headband; the lamp can be moved to our separate GoPro-compatible helmet adapter when needed. Storm 3100 and 9000 share the same click-release system as PRO across both series. Built for athletes and outdoor users.
Same electronics. Same repairability. Pick the one that matches how you'll use it.
What's the difference between Storm 700 and 1200?
Both weigh 90 g with battery. Both take the same 18500 cell. The difference is in what's inside and in the box:
-
Storm 700
Standard circuit board, one battery in the box. 725 real lumens.
-
Storm 1200
Upgraded circuit board with better heat dissipation (so 1,225 lumens can sustain without throttling), two batteries in the box (always one in reserve).
Same headband, same optics, same ruggedness. The 1200 is the 700 with more headroom and more runtime.
Can I mount my Stormlight to a helmet or bike?
Yes — and here's the part we're quietly proud of.
Every Stormlight lamp has GoPro-compatible feet built into the lamp head. That means any standard GoPro mount — helmet, handlebars, chest rig, whatever you already own — works out of the box. No adapters, no plates, no extra hardware.
For mounting on our own Stormlight click system (used on headbands and our helmet brackets), we've rebuilt the other side of the connection. GoPro's standard uses two prongs; ours uses four. You'll notice it most the day one of them breaks: the mount keeps holding.
Storm 3100 and 9000 (both PRO and SPORT) ship with the click-release system — you can swap between headband, helmet, or anything else in seconds without tools.
Storm 700 and 1200 in PRO also ship with click-release.
Storm 700 and 1200 in SPORT ship solid-mounted to the headband. The reason is comfort: when the lamp sits tight against the band, it stays stable on long runs, ski tours, and fast movement. If you want to swap it to a helmet or bike, remove one screw on the bottom of the lamp and transfer it to our click system. It takes a minute, and you get the best of both: rock-solid on the head, quick-swap when you need it.
More mount options are on the way — handlebar adapters for cycling and other setups. Same mounting standard throughout, so your lamp stays compatible as the ecosystem grows.
Batteries Are User-Serviceable. Here's How.
What's the cable between the lamp head and the battery pack? Can it be replaced?
On the Storm 3100 and Storm 9000, a cable connects the lamp head to the external battery pack. This isn't a charging cable — it's our own command cable, carrying power and control signals between the two components.
We designed it as a separate, user-replaceable part for a specific reason: in a system with external batteries, the cable is the most exposed element. If it catches on a branch, gets pinched by a helmet strap, or simply wears out over years of use, you don't lose the lamp — you replace a cable. The lamp head keeps working. The battery pack keeps working. The system comes back online at the cost of a cable.
Two length options:
- The standard 40 cm cable ships with the Storm 3100. Fits comfortably with the battery on the headband or in an outside pocket.
- A longer extension cable is available separately — recommended for very cold conditions, where you'll want the battery pack closer to your body heat (inner jacket pocket, chest rig, base-layer pocket). Lithium cells lose output in deep cold; keeping the pack warm keeps the lumens where they should be.
Every cable is a spare part you can order directly from us.
How do I change the battery in Storm 700 or Storm 1200?
Both lamps open on the side with a single click. Pop it open, swap the 18500 cell, close it. No tools. 10 seconds.
How do I change the battery pack on Storm 3100 or Storm 9000?
These two use an external battery pack connected to the lamp via a click-in command cable. To swap:
- Click the cable out of the old battery pack
- Click it into a fresh one
- Carry on
No tools. No unscrewing anything.
Can I use my Storm 3100 battery in a Storm 9000?
They use the same click connector, but they're different batteries — Storm 3100 is 7.4V, Storm 9000 is 14.8V. In practice it's hard to confuse them: the Storm 9000 pack is twice the length and twice the weight of the Storm 3100 pack, and you'll feel the difference before you try to connect anything.
The batteries aren't interchangeable across models. If you own both, you'll know which is which the moment you pick one up.
My lamp won't charge. What's wrong?
Nine times out of ten, it's dust or lint in the USB-C port. Here's what to try:
- Look carefully into the port with a flashlight — any dust, fiber, or debris?
- Spray a short burst of electrical contact cleaner into the port (not compressed air at high pressure — it can push debris further in)
- Blow it out gently
- Try a different USB-C cable — cables fail more often than ports
If none of this works, email us. If your lamp is in warranty, we'll ship a replacement part.
If something goes wrong, we want to hear about it. That's how the next generation of lamps gets better.

A Small Brand With Real People Behind It.
Who is Stormlight?
Stormlight AS is a Norwegian headlamp brand founded by Bjarte Hollevik in Burfjord, north of the Arctic Circle. We design lamps for people who work and play in places where the light really matters. See our Our Story page for the long version.
Where are the lamps made?
Our lamps are manufactured at a factory we co-own in Shenzhen, China — the global hub for consumer electronics. Stormlight holds a 49.9% stake; our manufacturing partner, with over 20 years of experience in precision electronics, holds 50.1%.
This is not a typical OEM relationship. We have alignment at ownership level, not just in contracts. It's also why every part is user-replaceable — we designed them that way from the start.
We actively source components close to the factory to reduce transport emissions and keep the supply chain lean.
Where can I buy Stormlight in a store?
We're still in the early days of retail distribution. Right now, most customers order directly from us, and we have a small number of partner shops in specific regions. As our retail network grows, we'll add a store locator to this site.
If you're a retailer interested in carrying Stormlight, email us.
If your question isn't here, it doesn't mean we don't want to answer it. It just means we haven't been asked enough times to put it on the page. Email us — we read everything, and we'll get back to you within one business day.
